Immediate dentures

Immediate dentures are dentures that are made before extracting the remaining teeth and are placed in the mouth immediately after the removal of the teeth. The impression for the immediate dentures is taken while the natural teeth are still present in the mouth, and the dentures are made based on that impression. Right after the patient removes the natural teeth, the dentures can be placed in the mouth. This way the patient avoids the waiting period. It allows patients to get used to the dentures faster, and they never have to walk around without teeth. With the conventional dentures, the teeth have to be extracted first and there is a waiting period of at least a month.

Procedure:

Immediate dentures can be both partial and complete. The procedure usually requires four to five visits to the dentist. During the first visit to the dentists, they will be able to let you know whether you are an eligible candidate for an immediate denture. The following step includes planning of the type of denture the patient will get, whether a partial or a complete one. If there is a need for extractions, that will also be included in the plan. The process starts with impressions, that give exact molds of the situations. Based on the molds, dental technicians will create the dentures. On the same day when the dentures are done, the patient is scheduled for extractions. Once the extractions are done, he gets the immediate dentures together with proper instructions.

Pros:

There are several advantages that come with these dentures. The first one is of course that the patient doesn’t have to spend any time without teeth. The fact that they’ve lost all their teeth can influence the emotional state of many people. With these dentures, patients avoid that unwanted moment. Another thing that this denture does is that it protects the extraction wounds in the mouth. It will act as a healing cover that will prevent food from getting in and also will control the bleeding. The dental technician and dentist have a better chance of replicating the teeth in the denture because some of them are present in the mouth. The patient avoids an edentulous period, so all the functions like chewing, speaking and swallowing are much easier with immediate dentures.

Cons:

One of the disadvantages is that these dentures cost more than the conventional ones. The price is around 10% to 20% percent higher. It varies from one to another dental office. Sometimes the dentist will have to do some corrections because he cannot completely predict how the alveolar bone will look before the extraction. In the following period after the extraction, the tissues will go through changes and resorption. So it means that the immediate dentures might not fit perfectly after a certain time. Among other disadvantages, you will find that immediate dentures are not mean for everyone. Some patients are not indicated to get them. The ones that usually do, simply can’t have a period in their life when they are without teeth. That is mostly because of their profession. People with public professions are the ones that choose to get this type of dentures.
