The Smile Lite MDP invented by Prof. Louis Hardan is the result of three years of research, development, and test solely focused on dental photography. It can be dubbed as the mini photo studio due to its portability and high-quality results. Smile Lite MDP has three groups of LED to provide a color corrected lighting for a better image- two sets of lateral LED each contains 6 LEDs and a central set of 12 LEDs altogether a total of 24 LEDs. The three groups of LEDs can be lit up independently, and their LEDs can be dimmed to the desired illumination level this made possible due to the four steps of power available in the device design.

The back side of the Smile Lite MDP is provided with a universal phone adaptor which can easily be adjusted to fit any range of phone width between 55-85cm according to the specifications slated on Smile Line website. The universal adapter can be adjusted with an Allen key to fit the camera position of the smartphone to be used, to ensure that that camera is in a central position before use. Another wonderful feature is its plug and plays feature that exhibits a seamless operation with little or no additional setup aside plugging up your mobile device to the adapter. No need for calibration, camera app integration or any form of technical know-how what so ever. A piece of cake.

Some other key features of the Smile Lite are:

Diffuser

The diffuser is a key part of the Smile Lite that can be magnetically coupled to the lateral set of LEDs to diffuse the light emanating from them hence giving a shade corrected lighting for your dental photography.

Polarizing Filter

The Polarizing filter is also magnetically coupled to the central LEDs and help to take away all forms of glare to get a centrally polarized shot.

USB micro slot

A type c USB slot is available on the device for charging it up.

Tripod Slot

Smile Lite can be fitted on a tripod via a threaded opening in the underneath of the device to give it a perfect balance and making it possible to rest your hand a while in the middle of a photo shoot session.

Different Shot Mode on Smile Lite MDP

Traditionally, photography is usually done with (single lens reflex) camera, but Smile Lite MDP which can be considered a mini photo-studio comes packed with key features such as:

Ring flash

With Smile lite MDP, you can take dental photos with a ring flash with the help of the central LEDs, while the sides LEDs are off.. The central LEDs can form a ring around the lens of the smartphone, hence the name ring flash. It is vital in dental photography to be able to illuminate a patient’s teeth evenly. To further enhance the photo, you can apply lip retractors and flexible palette to serve as a black background for a professional feel.

Dual flash

By taking advantage of the two adjoining sets of LEDs, you can take dual flash shots. The sides at full power and the central LEDs off. With each set of side LEDs posing as a standalone LED to deliver white balanced dental photos. Flexi palette and lip retractors can be applied as it was done with the ring flash.

Photography with diffuser

This shot can be taken by putting off the central LEDs and magnetically attaching a diffuser to the side LEDs which are at full power. The primary purpose of the diffuser is to diffuse the light coming from the side LEDs to provide a shadow effect for better surface texture feel of the teeth and gum.

Photography with a polarizing filter

The central LEDs are at full power and a polarizing filter attached to it. But the side LEDs are put off. The filter serves the purpose of removing forms of glare from the photo.

Photography with both diffuser and polarizing filter

In this shot mode, both the central and the lateral LEDs are on with the polarizing filter and diffusers attached respectively. This kind of shot produced from this combination is known as the hybrid technology shot.

Making short videos

With the help of the tripod attachment feature, you can mount the Smile Lite on a tripod for shooting short videos for your different laboratory analysis.

Our dentists we are making use of the Smile Lite in our laboratory starting from January onwards in a one-year office test and from April onwards we will switch to the iPhone XR for better picture quality. The bottom line here is the Smile Lite is an excellent innovation from Prof. Harden though there is still room for improvement as regards the overall LED placements, other than that, it is decent hardware you should have in your laboratory.
