Plak merupakan lapisan putih kekuningan pada gigi yang terdiri dari berbagai bakteri dan produknya.<br \/>Plak terutama melekat pada tepi gusi dan ruang antar gigi. Seiring waktu, plak akan berkembang dan mengalami perubahan komposisi bakteri. Asam yang dihasilkan oleh bakteri yang memetabolisme gula berperan dalam pembentukan karies. Karang gigi terbentuk dari plak lama yang mengalami kalsifikasi.
