Dalam kasus di mana karies telah menyebar sangat dekat dengan pulpa, pulpa hanya dilindungi oleh lapisan dentin yang sangat tipis. Untuk menghindari paparan terhadap agen eksternal, pulpa perlu ditutup dengan bahan khusus. Dokter gigi biasanya menggunakan kalsium hidroksida atau MTA. Kedua bahan ini memiliki efek menenangkan pada pulpa serta merangsang pembentukan lapisan dentin reparatif yang berfungsi sebagai pelindung.
