Bayi yang baru lahir sering terinfeksi oleh spesies kandida yang ditransmisikan selama proses kelahiran melalui saluran vagina.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Kandida adalah jamur diploid yang tumbuh baik sebagai ragi maupun berfilamen. Candida albicans memiliki beberapa musuh alami di rongga mulut, antara lain epitel mulut itu sendiri yang berfungsi sebagai penghalang, persaingan alami dari mikroorganisme lain di rongga mulut, serta antibodi IgA yang mencegah perlekatan jamur ke epitel mulut, serta enzim-enzim seperti lisozim, laktoperoksidase, dan
