Bonding sendiri merujuk pada proses pengikatan bahan gigi khusus ke permukaan gigi. Setiap pasien memiliki kebutuhan perawatan yang berbeda. Beberapa orang ingin mengatasi jarak antar gigi, sementara yang lain ingin memperbaiki gigi yang terlalu pendek. Bonding komposit dapat menjadi solusi untuk masalah-masalah ini. Langkah pertama yang dilakukan dokter gigi adalah memilih warna komposit yang paling sesuai dengan warna alami gigi Anda. Dalam beberapa kasus, mereka bahkan menggunakan beberapa warna untuk mencapai hasil yang lebih alami. Setelah itu, komposit diaplikasikan ke permukaan gigi dan dibentuk hingga sesuai dengan bentuk yang diinginkan. Dalam beberapa situasi, dokter gigi mungkin perlu menghilangkan sedikit lapisan email untuk memastikan hasil akhir yang lebih alami. Setelah komposit ditempatkan, cahaya khusus digunakan untuk mengeraskannya. Langkah terakhir adalah pemolesan untuk mendapatkan kilau yang optimal. Terdapat dua teknik dalam prosedur bonding komposit. Teknik langsung dilakukan dengan mengaplikasikan dan membentuk komposit langsung di gigi pasien dalam satu kunjungan. Inilah alasan banyak pasien memilih prosedur ini. Jika dilakukan oleh dokter gigi yang berpengalaman, hasil estetikanya dapat menyamai restorasi lainnya. Selain itu, dalam sebagian besar kasus, prosedur ini dapat diselesaikan hanya dalam satu kali kunjungan, sehingga pasien tidak perlu menunggu lama. Hasil akhir bisa didapatkan dalam waktu sekitar satu jam, sementara veneer dan mahkota biasanya memerlukan beberapa kali kunjungan. Keunggulan lainnya adalah prosedur ini minim invasif karena tidak menghilangkan banyak struktur gigi alami, berbeda dengan veneer atau mahkota yang biasanya membutuhkan pengasahan gigi. Selain itu, prosedur ini umumnya tidak menimbulkan rasa sakit.
