Dans les cas o\u00f9 la carie dentaire s'est propag\u00e9e tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s de la pulpe dentaire, celle-ci n'est recouverte que d'une tr\u00e8s fine couche de dentine. Afin d'emp\u00eacher la pulpe d'\u00eatre expos\u00e9e aux agents externes, il faut la recouvrir d'un mat\u00e9riau sp\u00e9cial. Les dentistes utilisent de l'hydroxyde de calcium ou du MTA. Ces deux agents ont un effet s\u00e9datif sur la pulpe et la stimulent \u00e0 former une couche de dentine r\u00e9paratrice qui aura un r\u00f4le protecteur.
